As we dive into the heart of summer, we hope you’re enjoying the warm weather and all the activities it brings. This month, we have some exciting news, tips, and special offers to share with you.
Summer Tips from your Chiropractor
Avoid Prolonged Sitting
- Why: Sitting for long periods can increase the risk of spinal issues.
- Tip: Take breaks to stand, stretch, and walk around every 30 minutes if you have a desk job or are traveling.
Lift Properly
- Why: Incorrect lifting techniques can strain the spine and lead to injuries.
- Tip: Always bend your knees and keep your back straight when lifting objects. Avoid twisting your body while lifting.
Engage in Regular Exercise
- Why: Exercise strengthens the muscles that support your spine and improves flexibility.
- Tip: Incorporate activities like walking, swimming, or yoga into your routine. Focus on core-strengthening exercises, which support your lower back.
News from the world of Chiropractic
Significant Study on Chiropractic Spinal Manipulation: A study published in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders revealed that chiropractic spinal manipulation (CSM) can significantly reduce the likelihood of lumbar spine re-operations. Conducted by researchers at University Hospitals Connor Whole Health, the study found that adults who received CSM for sciatica following lumbar discectomy were 45% less likely to undergo additional lumbar surgeries compared to those who received usual medical care.
McKenzie Method Research: Recent research highlighted in Chiropractic Economics emphasized the benefits of the McKenzie Method for pain management. Studies have shown positive effects when this method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy is used, marking a significant advancement in non-invasive pain treatment options for chiropractors
When Chiropractors play golf
As the weather has improved (for now) and I have more time on my hands I have decided to return to playing some golf. We are fortunate to be in beautiful Surrey where we are not short of golf courses set in the beautiful countryside.
In clinic we see several golfers and I am always interested to hear the ins and outs of the game and I am now able to more closely relate being back out on the course myself!
A few observations from a not very good golfer and slightly better Chiropractor:
- Use the ‘golfers swing’, an actual description when picking up your ball. That is using your golf club to support yourself and bending ant the hip keeping one leg on the ground and the other to swing out to 90°. This keeps your spine neutral allowing you to pick your ball up.
- Avoid overdoing it at the driving range. Fatigue is a big factor in back issues. Be wary to focus on quality over quantity at the range. Hitting a lot of balls in a short time will fatigue the smaller spinal muscles that help rotation and generate power for the golf swing and can lead to increased risks of injury.
- Trolley over carry. I never appreciated the benefits of a trolley until I bought one. Along the lines of the point above, fatigue can play a big role in injury prevention but also the quality of your round. Using a trolley reduces the load on your spine which, when added up over the course of a round can make a big difference. Personally, I really notice less fatigue and better playing experience with a trolley.
Hopefully these tips will help keep your back healthy, unfortunately I am no help when it comes to improving your game! Enjoy the sunshine and keep healthy when out on the course.
Testimonial of the month
“I’ve had chronic back pain and flare-ups since I was 14 and have been to countless chiropractors and physical therapists in the 25 years since then. Alex has been extremely helpful in keeping me flare-up free and mostly pain free for at least 6 months, unheard of in those 25 years. I definitely recommend him and the rest of the clinic. Everyone there is super professional and helpful.”
