Headache Treatment with The Guildford Spine Centre

Headaches are very common, especially tension headaches. The World Health Organization estimates 33 percent of men and 50 percent of women are affected by tension headaches, and one in 20 adults gets a headache every day.

Headaches can very rarely be a sign of more serious underlying issues hence the need for any headache to be diagnosed by a qualified professional such as the Chiropractors at the Guildford Spine Centre – Chiropractor Guildford.

Commonly headaches can be caused by issues in the neck. How does that occur you ask, to understand that you need to grasp the basics of referred pain. That is the cause of the pain is in one location such as the muscles and joints of the neck and the pain feels somewhere else like in the head causing a headache. A good example of this is arm pain in heart disease or heart attack.

Over time research has been conducted to isloate and clarify which muscles refer pain where. Here is just one example, the Trapezius muscle. Not every muscle causes referred pain, some are greater culprits than others. Often if you know which muscles refer pain where it is simple by process of elimination to find the source of your headache, by pressuring the muscle you can often duplicate the headache confirming the source.

How do we treat these problems at The Guildford Spine Centre – Chiropractor Guildford? There are a few options, medically you can take pain killers. These will generally give some temporary relief however if the source of the problem is not addressed the headache will simply come back. The other issue with taking painkillers for headaches is that one of the most common causes of headache is painkiller use. It’s a catch 22 situation. Drugs that are often taken for headaches such as Asprin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen and any painkiller with caffeine in it.

At The Guildford Spine Centre – Chiropractor Guildford we thoroughly investigate, diagnose and treat the underlying neck issues including muscles and spine alignment to get to the cause of the problem. Headaches arising from the neck respond fantastically to Chiropractic treatment. So don’t delay, book today for relief from your headaches.

Thought of the day Friday 19th Sept – Alex Chiropractor Guildford

Friday is here again so here is the thought of the day from The Guildford Spine Centre – Chiropractor Guildford:

“The greater the obstacle,
the more glory in overcoming it.”
~ Moliere

This week has been busier again at The Guildford Spine Centre – Chiropractor Guildford. With more patients walking through the door in search of pain relief and better health. We are always ready to welcome many more. They always say that things come in three’s. I would change that to things come in waves, this week it has been sciatica and disc protrusions (slipped disc – see here why that term is incorrect). I have had a number of new patients with leg pain that has been causing them untold misery and will not go away. I enjoy seeing patients like these at the Guildford Spine Centre – Chiropractor Guildford. I enjoy seeing these patients because they can respond very well to conservative chiropractic treatment.

Sciatica is often very intense and debilitating, putting socks on in the mornings is almost impossible. Pain will often worsen as you sit or stand for any prolonged time and can go down the leg as far as the foot. If this sounds like something you or someone you know might be suffering with don’t hesitate and book today!

To patients and followers alike, have a great weekend. Be careful with your spines and I look forward to next week when I will be looking to help patients with neck pain and headaches.

Thought for Monday – Alex Chiropractor Guildford

Another Monday comes around, after a busy week and a fun weekend spent in Guildford promoting The Guildford Spine Centre – Chiropractor Guildford and how Chiropractic can help and change peoples’ lives. It was a busy Saturday and it was great to chat to so many different and interested people. Some in pain, others simply wanting to be a their best.

As another week begins it is time for another thought of the day, one I felt was very appropriate to the changes that we make during Chiropractic treatment and that even long term postural issues can be changed and corrected with time, effort and commitment.

“Change might not be fast
and it isn’t always easy.
But with time and effort,
almost any habit can be reshaped.”

Cracking your own neck? by Alex Chiropractor Surrey

Are you one of those people that click their own necks? Lots of people do it; sometimes for relief, sometimes for dramatic effect, sometime just because they can, often without trying to.  But what is the difference between clicking it yourself and a Chiropractor doing it?

The need to click one’s own neck is potentially a sign of an underlying problem.  Often the need to do it is down to poor posture that puts excess stress on the joints in the cervical (neck) spine.  Due to the stresses on the spine, the joints become restricted and uncomfortable.  If an on-going problem, it may get gradually worse. When you click your own neck (self adjust) you are mostly ‘clicking’ either the joint above or below the restricted one that needs to move properly.  Chiropractors train over 4 years to adjust the right joint in the right way (see picture below).  This relieves the restricted joint and frees up any trapped nerves.

Is there anything wrong with clicking my own neck?

Most people are unaware of the danger of doing it yourself is that you’re clicking the wrong joints.  When you self adjust it may make the same ‘popping’ noise (air being released from the joint) as a Chiropractic adjustment; it might provide some short term relief.  But it can cause damage.

When a joint is restricted, the joints above and below work harder to compensate for the lack of movement in the stiff joint.  So these joints are moving too much already and when you self adjust you are forcing them to move even further, I found this great illustration below that shows exactly what is happening (see picture).  This can, over time, cause stretching of the ligaments that support the spine and lead to instability and future problems.

Self adjusting neck - clicking

So what should I do if I always click my own neck?

From what we’ve learnt so far, you potentially have an underlying problem and are causing damage to the ligaments of your spine.  The first thing is to review your posture to prevent unnecessary stress on your neck and shoulders.  The next thing is to have a full examination with the Guildford Spine Centre – Chiropractor Surrey to assess the movement and function of the individual joints of the spine.  The Chiropractor at The Guildford Spine Centre – Chiropractor Surrey will then be able to recommend stretches, postural advice, and, if necessary, a course of a Chiropractic adjustments to restore the correct movement to the spine.

Easing Neck and Back Stiffness – Chiropractor Surrey

How to ease back and neck stiffness by your local Chiropractor Surrey

Are you waking up each day with stiffness of neck and back? It is no a pleasant experience and can ruin your day from the onset. There are numerous reasons why you might be stiff. Your pillow may have been too firm, too high, or too low. You could have fallen asleep while watching TV and your head tilted to one side. Maybe you were using the laptop or iPad for too long. And perhaps, it could have been from an accident, such as whiplash or a fall. Here at the Guildford Spine Centre – Chiropractor Surrey we will talk you through steps to help alleviate your stiffness.

According to certain studies, Chiropractic, the art of manipulation of the spine to alleviate problems, and rehabilitative exercises that are used to treat patients at The Guildford Spine Centre – Chiropractor Surrey are effective in treating stiffness. Generally, the aim is to increase the flexibility and strength of your neck and back muscles. Because aside from stiffness of neck and back, weak neck muscles can cause fatigue, irritability, headaches, and loss of sleep. Your core muscles, the hip, the back, and the abdominal muscles, also play in on this. Non-use of these core muscles, can lead to back stiffness.

Certain simple exercises can be carried out each morning. These exercises, based on Chiropractic studies, have been proven to increase flexibility and strength of your neck muscles; thereby, reducing stiffness. These exercises are incorporated as part of any treatment plan at The Guildford Spine Centre – Chiropractor Surrey.

If you have tightness and pain at the back of your neck, you could try cervical flexions. Tuck your chin in, and flex you head forward attempting to touch your chin and chest. Repeat this 5 times.
If you have stiffness of neck on the sides, perhaps after leaning your head to one side for 10-15 seconds, you could also try lateral flexions. Bend your head so that your left ear and left shoulder touches. Make sure not to rotate or turn your head while doing this. Hold the position for 10-15 seconds. Perform on the other side and repeat for 5 times.

If the base of your neck is the problem, you could try cervical rotations. Turn your head to one direction as far as it will go reaching for the shoulders. Make sure not to raise your shoulders. Perform on the other side and repeat for 5 times, make sure you do not cause pain when doing these movements.

For stiffness in the back, there are also several simple exercises that you can do. According to several prominent clinics, the pelvic tilt and the spinal twist are suggested exercises to relieve back stiffness. To perform the pelvic tilt, lie flat on the floor with knees bent and with each exhalation, contract your abs and move your belly toward the floor. To perform the spinal twist, sit up straight on a chair, fold your arms over your chest and twist your torso to one side.

Simple exercises coupled with Chiropractic are a good way to relieve daily nuances like stiffness of neck and back. The relief gives you piece of mind and a heightened sense of well being as you are no longer daunted with the pain and the inflexibility of your neck and back. If you suffer any of the symptoms mentioned don’t hesitate give The Guildford Spine Centre – Chiropractor Surrey a call today to book an appointment.

Chiropractors have many years of education.

Today’s chiropractor receives a broad education very similar to medical doctors. In fact, it’s quite comparable to the education received by medical practitioners.

A medical doctor (MD) and a chiropractor (DC) while different have both received a degree from a government accredited medical school or chiropractic college and are licensed to practice.

Your health is completely up to you. You can come for relief, or to keep your body in shape and functioning as it should. Preventative care keeps you feeling your best and helps your body prevent aches and pains in the future. It’s just like visiting your dentist regularly!

Yes you can see a chiropractor after surgery.

Have you had surgery in the past? We’d love to sit down with you and talk to you about how chiropractic care can help. Rest assured that we would avoid the surgically modified areas of your spine.
